Network of Jordanian Women to Defend Women’s Rights and Participation Announced the Declaration of Protecting Women from Extremism

 

Al-Hayat Center held the annual conference for the Network of Jordanian Women to Defend Women’s Rights and Participation (WDRP) and the closing ceremony for Women Democratic Empowerment project under the patronage of HE Mr. Mousa Al Ma’aitah, Minister of Political and Parliamentary Affairs and the presence of HE Mr. Andrea Matteo Fontana, Ambassador of the European Union delegation in Jordan and number political & public figures, media out lets, and Women Network’s members. The conference included number of training workshops on women’s political participation and the role of women members of parliament in supporting women’s rights and issues and social media role in promoting, advocacy, and the legal frameworks for women’s rights and announced the Declaration of Protecting Women from Extremism.

 

Mr. Mousa Al Ma’aitah ensured through his speech on the importance of women’s participation in pol itical life and the need to involve women as decision makers and women equality, also that the presence of women in Jordan spreads all over the governorates not only in Amman. The minister demonstrated the history of women participation globally, in the region, and locally, HE praised the efforts and work made by the Women’s network members and Al Hayat center, ensuring that governments should move forward in developing and giving women opportunities in political, economic, and social sectors. Regarding the governorates councils and women municipal members HE indicated that women participation made a great effect and that a minimum of 15% in each governorate council is dedicated for women and indicated that women members is being a great added value to these councils, hoping for more participation in the next period. Finally the minister discussed the role of women in countering violet extremism and radicalization and that women are the first in line to counter radical ideologies. 

 

MR. Andrea Matteo Fontana indicated that supporting women is within the top priorities of the European Union delegation to Jordan and praised the Women’s project qualitative and quantitative outcomes and the coordination and implementation efforts done by the Women’s network and Al-Hayat center. Mr. Andrea thanked the Network’s members for their commitment and encouraged them to expand the activities and work in their local areas to empower the maximum number of women possible in order increase the participation in decision making positions.

 

General Director of Al-Hayat Center Dr, Amer Bani Amer explained the role of the center in working with women of the network through the project’s period and programs related to women participation the Center implemented and activating the role of women in elections and that this conference will be a baseline to future projects that will excel Jordanian women role in political life. 

 

During the conference, the Women’s Network announced the declaration of protecting women from extremism and its effect, and enhance the role of women in countering radicalism, mentioning its importance in developing and protecting the society. The Network of Jordanian Women to Defend Women’s Rights and Participation established by Al-Hayat Center-RASED in 2013 to be a platform for Jordanian women to defend their rights, building women’s capacity and raise awareness in political and human rights aspects.
